Freeville History Walking Tour

  • September 16, 2018
  • 3:30 pm
  • In front of the elementary school

Hello and happy almost-fall!

As promised, I’ll be repeating the history walking tour of the village this Sunday from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. The theme is “Freeville on the Move: Mill Dam to Rail Juntion” and will include information about the early development of the village, common architectural styles, and historical facts about individual homes and businesses.

We will meet in front of the elementary school where the Freeville Farmer’s Market will be in full swing. Head over a little early to get a coffee or snack, and stay after to peruse all the delicious goodies the market has to offer.

The tour will take about 60 minutes, and the weather is supposed to be dry but warm – water bottle recommended!

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Your Village Historian,

Kristen Olson

Neighborhood Watch Program Meeting

  • September 10, 2018
  • 7:00 pm
  • Village Hall

The Village of Freeville will soon become the fifth community in the county to establish a registered neighborhood watch program under the auspices of the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department. At a meeting of concerned citizens at Bravo Restaurant a week ago, Deputy Sheriff Karl Bowers strongly urged the 16 residents in attendance to move forward with the program, and most of us agreed that it would be a strategy worth pursuing in an effort to reduce crime in the Village.

In a wide-ranging discussion of crime-prevention and security issues, Deputy Bowers briefly outlined the advantages of setting up a neighborhood watch, which he said can be helpful even for communities that, like Freeville, only occasionally experience outbreaks of crime. He emphasized that the program does not involve vigilante-style patrolling of streets by community members, but that it does involve being vigilant, and looking out for one’s neighbors. The use of signage identifying the Village as a neighborhood watch community can serve to put would-be criminals on notice that folks here are on high alert.

Deputy Bowers will be present at an organizational meeting for the program to be held at the Village Hall at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 10th. All those interested in making the Village an even safer place to live are encouraged to attend.

Mayor, Village of Freeville
